The Sunday Sessions: The Academic Show Us Exactly Why They’re The Country’s Most Exciting Band

These young lads from Mullingar live up to the hype...

This week Mullingar natives The Academic join us for The Sunday Sessions and prove exactly why they’re the most exciting band in the country at the moment and show us what the hype is really all about.

The four-piece is made up of frontman Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin on drums, and brothers Stephen and Matt Murtagh on bass and lead guitar.

With the signing of a global publishing deal, playing support for The Pixies and Delorentos, not to mention a string of festival appearances that included, Longitude, Indiependence and Spain’s Benicassim, 2014 has turned out to be quite the year for The Academic.

New material is on the way from the four-piece and so we caught up with them for a fantastic live session at The Workman’s Club, Dublin, before they catapult to the top of the indie music scene and leave their hometown of Mullingar for dust.

The lads kick off the session with Bear Claws, the band’s anthemic first release that combines indie and pop perfectly into one song with catchy hook after hook… Yes, you will be singing along by the end of the video.

The Academic also performed their infectious track Forrest before sitting down with our girl Grace O’Reilly to chat about new material, being the best thing to come from Mullingar since Joe Dolan (our words not theirs) and the other potential band names.

The Sunday Sessions promises to bring you special performances and interviews from some of the most exciting emerging talent. Next week we return with some more phenomenal homegrown talent.
