Iggy & the Stooges drummer Scott Asheton has passed away, aged 64.

The Michigan drummer temporarily left the band in 2011 following an undisclosed injury but rejoined in 2013 for their LP Ready to Die. The cause of his death has not been confirmed.

Frontman Iggy Pop last night paid tribute to his bandmate, writing on Facebook:

“My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night.

“Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me.

“My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.”

The Ashetons formed The Stooges with Iggy Pop and Dave Alexander in 1967.  May he rest in peace.
