This smart laundry hack makes washing clothes a LOT easier

Because doing washing is the worst.

Trine Jensen-Burke

Now, how much do you love doing laundry…?

Probably just about as much we as do.

To be honest, it’s not so much the laundry I hate, as the actual sorting it into piles before putting the wash on that I find dreadfully boring – and so, so time-consuming. (Especially if you are anything like me, and actually have a whole host of different categories for washing!)

Well, no more. I recently came across this rather genius hack that Sydney-based mum-of-three Holly came up with that cut her laundry time in half. HALF guys. And the best bit? All that is required is a little bit of prep, and you are good to go.

Just take a look at this:

Here is what you need to do:

Get yourself a cupboard with a few shelf options:

  • Two large shelves – for your whites and dark colours
  • Three medium shelves – for lighter colours
  • One small shelf for items that require special treatment (ie: delicates)
  • Shelf or slots along the side for towels

Then label each shelf clearly and place a basket on each one for the clothes. This will make it easier for the kids (and partner) to stick to the plan.

When it’s time to do the washing, simply take the basket off the shelf and transfer directly into the washing machine. This saves time on sorting into colours and putting clothes back in the basket when you realise you don’t have enough items for a full load

Here is what Holly explained to Kidspot about her “invention”:

“I was just so sick of taking all the clothes out to sort and then having to put them back in the basket if I couldn’t get through all the loads. We also only have a small outdoor laundry so if I sorted clothes into piles, they ended up sitting in the bathroom and looked awful when guests visited.”

After having welcomed twins, the now mum-of-three took a long, hard look at her laundry routine.

“The amount of washing is astonishing, and I was brainstorming how to minimise the workload and make it easier to get washing done in a couple of minutes.

“This method saves me going through that whole process of sorting, so when I’m ready to wash, I just grab a basket and put it straight into the machine. I also like that my sweet little pastel and white baby clothes aren’t mixed with my builder husband’s work clothes.”
