Nothing like a true crime to start your day

Whether you’re an avid fan or just looking for something new to switch up your listening habits, there is an abundance of podcasts out there to sink your teeth into.

The best part is that they don’t require your full attention, you can do two things at once, whether it be making dinner or just taking the bus to the office.

While there are plenty of incredible, well-reported true crime series out there, it’s also a genre filled with sensationalised and morally dubious takes.

Just remember before you dive into anything it’s important to do your research. Now without further ado here are a few podcasts to give a go.

Your Own Backyard

This podcast ended up reigniting interest in this case and bringing justice to the family involved.

Hosted by journalist Chris Lambert, Your Own Backyard is a compelling multi-part documentary podcast that investigates the 1996 disappearance of Cal Poly student Kristin Smart.

Chris has a thoughtful way of telling her story that will keep you hooked and have you asking why campus police didn’t take action sooner.

The 10-episode series takes listeners back to where it all started in San Luis Obispo, California, and later brings them to court as a man is convicted of her murder.

Sweet Bobby

This podcast may not have homicide at the heart of it but the way it could happen to anyone will love your skin crawling.

It really is one of those stories you have to listen to believe. Over its six episodes, award-winning journalist Alexi Mostrous will help Kirat Assi, the woman who found herself tangled up in this mess, tell the story of a 10-year-long scam.

One person single-handedly crafted over 50 different online personalities and scenarios with such startling detail and malicious intent all with one goal in mind: ruin Kirat’s life.

The Dropout

This podcast tells the story of biomedical CEO and Standford University dropout, Elizabeth Holmes, and how her so-called “life-changing” tech start-up Theranos was nothing but an explosive scam.

Though the story has been told before, perhaps most notably in the Hulu show of the same name starring Amanda Seyfried as the woman at the centre of the scandal, the podcast is much easier for those on the go.

What Happened To Annie?

This series investigates the life and mysterious death of Annie Borjesson, a Swedish musician who was found dead on Prestwick Beach in Scotland back in 2005.

Although authorities at the time concluded that she had died of suicide, her family had several doubts about what had happened.

This six-part podcast dives into what might have happened to Annie instead.

The Teacher’s Pet

An Australian crime podcast created in 2018, this show finally brought a killer to justice this year.

Like most of these stories, the Dawsons, Lyn and Christopher, seemed to have the perfect life on the outside. She was a wife and devoted mother and he was a teacher and a footballer.

They appear to have it all, supportive marriage, beautiful kids, and a stunning home on Sydney’s northern beaches but when Lyn goes missing without a trace in 1982, the carefully crafted illusion shatters.

The Girl With The Blue Mustang

When 18-year-old Michelle O’Keefe is found murdered in her blue Mustang in a California park and ride, investigators encounter a confusing crime scene and a witness who seems to know too much.

Keith Morrison who you may know as Matthew Perry’s stepfather and host of the hit American crime show Dateline, takes you through the story.

One thing you need to know is even when you think justice has been served a twist will completely change your mind.
