George Clooney has opened up about his longtime friend, Matthew Perry
The actor was speaking to Deadline about his new project ‘Boys In The Boat’ when he opened up about his relationship with the recently deceased actor.
George said that he had known Matthew since he was 16 years of age and after watching him get his break in the sitcom Friends, said he still didn’t seem happy.
“I knew Matt when he was 16 years old. We used to play paddle tennis together. He’s about 10 years younger than me. And he was a great, funny, funny, funny kid,” Clooney said.
“He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth. And he got on probably one of the best ever.”
Yet despite achieving his goal of landing the role of Chandler Bing on Friends, George said that his old pal still wasn’t satisfied with his life.
“We just knew that he wasn’t happy and I had no idea he was doing what, 12 Vicodin a day and all the stuff he talked about, all that heartbreaking stuff,” the actor said, referencing Matthew’s book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
“And it also just tells you that success and money and all those things, it doesn’t just automatically bring you happiness. You have to be happy with yourself and your life.”
Matthew had touched on this message during a podcast appearance before his shocking death back in October.
“I would like to be remembered as somebody who lived well, loved well, was a seeker,” he said on the Q with Tom Power podcast last year.
“And his paramount thing is that he wants to help people. That’s what I want.”
