ISPCA Issue Urgent Appeal Following the Discovery of 62 dogs at Redundant Breeding Establishment

Many of the dogs were elderly and suffering from severely matted coats.

ISPCA Inspector Lisa O’Donovan recently discovered 62 dogs at a premises which was a redundant breeding establishment in Co Cork.  While the premises were no longer operating as a breeding establishment, the now elderly owners had kept their breeding dogs and were struggling to cope with the sheer volume of animals.

“This was an unusual case” remarked Lisa, “The elderly persons involved found themselves no longer in a position to adequately care for the large volume of animals. The decision was made that the animals needed to be removed to improve their quality of life and their living conditions.”

The dogs ranged in breed from chihuahuas to poodles are now in the care of the dedicated staff at the National Animal Centre and the good news is that as the dogs are mostly used to human interaction they will be suitable for rehoming.

“Sometimes large quantities of dogs removed from breeding premises are highly un-socialised. However this is not the case with these particular dogs. They are friendly and trusting and we are very anxious for them to go to good, loving responsible homes where they can live out the remainder of their lives in comfort” added Lisa.

The discovery of uncared for dogs is unfortunately a very regular occurrence for the ISPCA Inspectors however it is always a relief when the dogs are suitable for rehabilitation and rehoming. Rehabilitation costs will be expensive as each dog will require individual care and treatment. The ISPCA’s daily bills are currently not being met by funds raised therefore they are urgently appealing to the public to help prevent animals suffering now by making a donation on www.ispca.ie.
