Animal lovers will go ape for this one…

Dublin Zoo has today announced the birth of a Goeldi’s monkey baby to the South American House. The new arrival was born on the 24th May and weighs approximately 20 grams. This is the first Goeldi’s monkey to be born at Dublin Zoo in a number of years.

Commenting on the new arrival zookeeper Susan O’Brien said, “We’re delighted with the new addition. Inca, the mother, arrived to Dublin Zoo in 2012 from Banham Zoo in the UK and although it is her first offspring she is taking to her new role as a mum very well. She is keeping the newborn very close to her at the moment and swinging around the habitat with her new baby on her back.

“In a couple of weeks we should be able to get close enough to determine the newborn’s gender but for now we are happy for the family to bond and get to know each other.

Goeldi’s monkeys blend into the forest so well that they were only first described in 1904. These rare, dark-haired monkeys, from western regions of South America’s tropical rainforests, mainly feed on fruit, vegetables, insects and bird eggs.

Kellogg’s Coco Pops, sponsors of the South American house are also inviting the public to suggest a name for the newest arrival based on its South American origin. To find out how you can enter, click here.
