A campaign launched by a Muslim neurologist based in California has raised over $100,000 for the victims and families of the San Bernardino mass shooting.
Faisal Qazi, from Pomona in California established the campaign Muslims United For San Bernardino, which has become the most successful Muslim-American crowdfunding scheme ever according to the LA Times.
More than 1,000 people have donated from across the USA, and the funds raised will go towards funeral expenses and other requirements for the families of those lost in the December 2nd attack.
Marya Ayloush, a 20-year-old student at Santa Monica Community College donated after seeing the campaign on Facebook. “This is an actual, tangible action we can do to show non-Muslims that we have your back,” she said. “In every situation where the terrorist happens to be a Muslim, every person, whether they admit it or not, is afraid they’ll be lumped in with these guys.”
There’s still 21 days left on the campaign, and with donations coming in at a rate of $1000 an hour the total looks set to skyrocket even further.
