Brought to you by the Department of Social Protection.

It’s good news for Mums and Dads.

From the 1st of September, all dads (and some mums) will be able to apply for two weeks paternity benefit if they and their partner are having or adopting a baby.

The scheme which has been rolled out under the Department of Social Protection guarantees two weeks paternity benefit at a minimum rate of €230 per week. The benefit will be paid to employees and self-employed people who are on paternity leave from work.

The scheme is available for up to 26 weeks after the child’s birth or adoption and is also available to same-sex couples.

To apply all you need is a public services card and you must also satisfy certain social insurance contribution conditions.

To find out more about the Paternity Benefit Scheme you can check out the Department of Social Protection’s website here.
