A shocking new survey has revealed that when it comes to sex, many Irish secondary schools avoided the questions!
The survey, published in today’s Irish Times revealed that the global average of people who did not receive sexual health education is 22 per cent but in Ireland, that figure has risen to 30 per cent.
The research was conducted by Durex to raise awareness for National Condom Week and analysed 29,994 people in 36 countries.
While just over half of teenagers leave secondary school with some form of sexual education, 15 per cent of us can not remember if our school provided sex education.
Many Irish people feel sex education is very poor in our secondary schools
Most of the participants revealed that friends, books, television and magazines formed the basis of their sexual knowledge.
Durex brand manager Hazel Roche said the survey hopes to encourage safe sex and wellness.
“National Condom Week gives us the chance to ensure safer sex is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. By partnering with the [Dublin Aids Alliance] and [Union of Students in Ireland] we want to raise the awareness of the value of good sexual health education, and the importance of safer sex,” she said.
“It is vital that we educate our nation because a condom can quite literally be a lifesaver.”
