Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is a great time for your children to spend some time together and prepare for the day ahead.

While a healthy cereal is, of course, perfect to provide your children with the energy they need for a busy school day, sometimes it’s nice to shake up breakfast time and try some new ideas and recipes.

Like adults, children become very bored with food if they are having the same thing day in and day out! Here’s our tips to pump up your breakfast time and provide your children with the brain power they need for the day ahead.

Granola with Yoghurt and Fresh Fruit

Granola is a nice alternative to cereal and topped off with some natural yoghurt and fresh fruit it is a quick breakfast treat. Making your own granola can be labourous and if you’re not up for the chore, there are so many excellent quality granolas that are just as good as making your own. Fill a glass with layers of granola, yoghurt and fresh fruit such as strawberries, raspberries or grapes and serve with a glass of orange juice.

Peanut Butter and Fruit Wraps

If you know tomorrow will be a busy morning, why not prepare a healthy breakfast the night before? Spread some peanut butter on a whole-wheat wrap before filling with granola, and lots of fresh fruit such as grapes, strawberries apples and bananas. A wrap is a great breakfast to eat on the go, and will ensure that your children don’t go without the most important meal of the day!

Banana Bread

Banana bread is a lovely breakfast treat and you can whip it up the night before or even make a few batches at the weekend and feeze them.

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees, before buttering a loaf pan. In a large bowl combine 250g of plain flour, 150g of granulated sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder, ¼ teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon into a large bowl.

In another bowl combine 4 ripe bananas, 100g melted butter and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract before adding in the bowl of dry ingredients. Mix well before pouring into the loaf tin and baking for 55 to 60 minutes.

Cool overnight on your counter and serve at room temperature in the morning. If you’re up for it, bake a few loaves at one time and freeze them for use later in the month.

Bagels and Scrambled Eggs

Frozen bagels are available in most supermarkets now and they are a great breakfast treat. If you have time in the morning, it is not a huge job to throw a few bagels onto your toaster. Whisk a few eggs together in a large bowl with a dash of milk and a pinch of salt before frying on a low heat.

A Smoothie and Weetabix

A smoothie is a nice treat in the morning and can be made with whatever fruits are in your basket. Children lap up the sweet treat, which you can whip up in a matter of minutes in your blender or food processer. Serve your smoothie with Weetabix and a sliced banana for an extra healthy breakfast.
