It wouldn't be the same without him.

It wouldn’t be the same without him.

When it comes to Mary Poppins there is one character, other than Mary, that springs to mind, Bert. Originally played by Dick Van Dyke, he was the one character who got Mary to loosen up and have some fun.

The iconic role made Dick a household name and lead on to a hugely successful acting career. Now at the age of 91 it appears that Dick will be joining the sequel of the popular 1964 movie.

Mary Poppins Returns stars Emily Blunt as the lead role and will be set 20 years after the original movie where Mary has to return to the Banks’ household once more to help them through a family tragedy.

According to The BBC, Dick has confirmed that he will be in the new movie. He spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the new movie saying:

“This one supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up.

It’s a great cast – Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy from Hamilton [Lin-Manuel Miranda].

“I think it’s the worst thing you can do. Certain people who do retire suddenly age. I think you have to stay active.”

It’s not yet known if he will just star as a cameo or have a role in the entire movie. Either way we’re delighted he’s on board.

The movie is due for release at Christmas in 2018.
