Coronation Street already draws in about six million viewers per episode, but producers are adamant that there’s a few things they can do to increase those numbers even more.

Changing character dynamics and the addition of more female focused plots are already happening on the street, but there’s an even bigger change coming to Weatherfield that’s likely to switch up the entire show.

In a good way.

Corrie producer Kate Oates has revealed that rather than just being a street, Corrie is set to become a whole town.

Speaking to What’s On TV magazine, Oates said that the series’ set is going to expand to include a new park, restaurants, and a spot for characters to have a bit of a reflection that isn’t Maxine’s bench.

“There will be a couple of new businesses and we’re going to have a little park area so not everything will happen at the Red Rec.

Sometimes we say in the story office that if Maxine hadn’t died where would people go to think, because it is Maxine’s bench where people have their pensive moments.”

Oates also said that the set expansion will not only allow for more locations, but for more diversity within the script and storylines themselves.

“There may also be another eaterie with a different kind of vibe. We have already got the cafe and bistro. It’s nice to see a community feel.

It does well for social dynamics if you’ve got people who were friends who are now colleagues or someone is someone’s boss. It always adds a nice energy.”

Corrie’s new set is currently in development.

Construction is expected to be finished by next Spring, so we won’t have to wait too long to see the Platts having some pensive moments in a new park, or the Barlows enjoying some food in a new eatery.
