‘I hear the drums echoing tonight…’
The Namib Desert will certainly hear the drums echoing tonight as an artist has created a sound installation that will play Toto’s Africa on loop.
Namibian artist, Max Siedentopf, set up the installation to play one song, and song only – why? Who knows, maybe Max just loves it.
The art/sound installation was created by placing seven white plinths in the desert which have six solar-powered speakers and one MP3 player laying on them.
Speaking to the BBC, the 27-year-old artist said: “[I] wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit ‘Africa’ in Africa.
“Some [Namibians] love it and some say it’s probably the worst sound installation ever. I think that’s a great compliment.”
Max hopes that the installation lasts for 55 million years, but is well aware that the deserts harsh conditions will *probably* batter it.
“Most parts of the installation were chosen to be as durable as possible, but I’m sure the harsh environment of the desert will devour the installation eventually.”
