Team Katie or Team Tom – Are You Taking Sides?

There's a fierce debate going on in the Her.ie offices; is Katie being brave and making a great escape, or is she just breaking poor Tom's heart?

With TomKat going their seperate ways, who deserves your sympathy?

In this day and age, we’re constantly told not to believe everything we read, but when a certain issue is persistent and receives consistent coverage in the media, it’s hard not to pay attention to it. Take, for example, the case of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise.

There have been so many weird rumours and reports about their relationship over the past few years that we can’t help but speculate about what has been going on behind the closed door of Cruise Manor. And, given the fact that Katie filed for divorce a few days ago, let’s just say that their relationship is all anyone can talk about.

When it comes to the divorce of TomKat, I’m very firmly on the side of Team Katie.

While some may argue that she fully knew what she was getting herself into, especially if those wife-contract rumours are true, I would like to put forward the idea that Katie was a woman who fell in love and therefore went along with whatever her beloved wanted.

You have to admit, in the first few months of their relationship, both of them did look happy. But after another few months, the public began to see less and less of Katie and the rare times that she was caught on camera, she looked miserable, drained and upset.

If the rumours are to be believed, Katie led a tough life when she was with Tom. She had to convert to the strange ways of Scientology, her own career disappeared, she was isolated away in her mansion and it seemed that Tom spoke for her for a long time.

Granted, I know that this is all speculation and that we will probably never know what really went on in their relationship, but what I do know is that Katie was pictured out and about today and her expression speaks for itself: she’s actually smiling.

It can be hard step to leave your partner, but Katie obviously felt it was time she broke away from Tom and got on with her own life.  Katie stood up for herself and reclaimed her freedom – this is why I’m Team Katie!

I think Tom Cruise is misunderstood.

There, I said it.

We’re always so quick to judge celebs, but I often look at famous people and think of them as the ultimate proof that money can’t buy you happiness.

As it stands, Tom Cruise is a man hitting half a century on this planet, with three failed marriages behind him. And, if reports are to be believed, his closest friends are fellow members of an organization he hands over massive amounts of money to.  No prizes for guessing where their best interests lie.

Don’t get me wrong, I, like most, think Scientology is little more than a cult. But I also think there’s more to Tom than Scientology.

A movie star since he was barely out of his teens, the star of classics like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Cocktail’ has lived his entire adult life under the glare of a spotlight, the price you pay for fame yes, but it’s a high cost.

As much as he looked like an absolute madman on Oprah’s couch when he and Katie first got together, I thought it was nice to see him so happy. As for all the rumours about an ‘arrangement’ between him and Katie? Well, if there’s any truth to it then she’s as much to blame as he, and I fail to see why their split has spurned all the ‘Run, Katie run!’ comments. She’s a grown woman, she chose to marry him, chose to have a child with him, and has chosen to be with him for the last five years. He can’t be all that bad surely?

So, as he hits fifty years of age, I think people should give Tom a break. The way I see it is he’s just another man who seems to find a ‘happy-ever-after’ the ultimate Mission Impossible, and that just strikes me as a little bit sad.
