Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he used to turn up on the set of Harry Potter still drunk from the night before as he tried to deal with the pressures of fame.
The actor discussed his battle with alcohol in an interview with Sky Arts and revealed that he drank heavily while filming the franchise in order to quell insecurities about the future of his career.
“I would have benefited from not drinking. It was not making me as happy as I wanted it to,” he said.
“It is not a real pressure but it is a pressure of living with the thought, ‘Oh, what if all these people are saying I am not going to have a career? What if they are all going to be right and will be laughing and I will be consigned to a bunch of ‘Where are they now?’ lists?”
The actor gave up alcohol in 2010 and has carved out a successful career in both theatre and film but while many child stars are eager to distance themselves from their earlier work, Radcliffe said he is grateful for the opportunities that it brought.
“People don’t shout Harry Potter at me now, they tend to know my name, which is lovely. But I always will credit the opportunities I get to Harry Potter. I would not be a happy person if I was bitter about those ten years of my life.”
