Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary has said he was “scalped” by baggage charges from his own company on a family holiday to Portugal.

Speaking on last night’s Late Late show, O’Leary revealed that this woke him up to the real cost of paying for bags with Ryanair.

“I never before have I been, what’s the word, scalped by Ryanair when we took all four children with the bags to Portugal.

“The baggage charges cost me more than the flights, this has to change” said the businessman.

O’Leary told show host Ryan Tubridy that the company are trying to respond to what customers want and that Ryanair are “polite”.

“I like to think we’ve always been reasonably polite as a company” he said during the interview.

There have been a number of changes to the airline this year including allocated seating and the introduction of a business class service for people who travel on a frequent basis.
