From July, Uruguay will become the world’s first country to allow recreational marijuana be sold in pharmacies.
This is the last step for the South American country in implementing the production, sale, and consumption of marijuana after it was fully legalised in 2013.
Under the law, buyers must sign up for a national registry of marijuana users to ensure they have fulfilled licensing procedures and do not exceed the monthly maximum purchase of 40 grams.
According to the Independent; Sixteen pharmacies have registered with the government to sell marijuana for recreational purposes. That number is expected to increase to 30 in the coming months.
The Government’s goal is not to promote the drug but to ensure the quality and to compete with the informal market.
Foreign tourists will not be able to purchase the drug in pharmacies.
