Irish father and son killed in Turkey named as police launch investigation

The father and son were from Co. Laois.

An Irish father and son killed in a moped accident in Alanya, Turkey have been named. The victims have been identified as Eoin Fitzpatrick (36) and his son Dylan (10).

The father and son were travelling on a moped when it collided with a bus in Turkey. The incident reportedly took place shortly after 3.30 pm local time on Monday, July 17th.

They were also on holiday with the dad’s teenage son Cian, who was not injured in the accident.

A police investigation is now underway.

It is believed the boy’s mother is travelling to Turkey.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was from Mountmellick in Co. Laois. The beloved dad has been fondly remembered by his loved ones, who are in shock following the tragedy.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Drivetime, John Byrne of Portlaoise Parish said the community is “so upset”.

“There’s a dark cloud hanging over Portlaoise today. A wave of shock and sympathy has been extended to them. We know the family have difficult days ahead.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement following the harrowing accident.

A spokesperson shared: “The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of any specific case.”
