A priest in Limerick is calling on churches across Ireland to sell their gold in order to fund a teacher’s salary it has been reported today.

Fr Tony O’Riordan has made the appeal in the wake of the Department of Education removing funding for a post at a school in Moyross.

According to RTE the school is now being forced to look at combining the two Junior Infants classes. Fr O’Riordan believes that this will result in a drop in the quality of education that the children will receive as the class would have 32 students.

He is thus calling on churches to sell their gold for “the greater good”, as the school board have tried to pay the teacher privately. They have so far only managed to raise the first month’s wages.

He added that they will continue to try and get the Department to “meet its responsibilities.”
