WATCH: The World’s Largest Eye Contact Experiment

The aim was to show real human connection

Cassie Delaney

Across 140 countries, a group called The Liberators International ran the largest eye contact experiment ever (assuming of course that there were precedents).

The message behind the experiment was to highlight the absence of real human connection and the tag line for the global event is “Real human connection doesn’t require wifi”.

The group say they are committed to encouraging public acts of peace.

Their website describes them as “a peaceful international social movement founded in Perth, Australia and are passionate about creating participatory public demonstrations for peace and videos that allow us to see that beyond our differences there is love and humanity”.

The group claim “Our global society has become thirsty for true connection and this experience allows you to be the change you wish to see in the world by creating an authentic, loving and respectful platform for human connection to flourish in public”.

Strangers were paired up and asked to look into each other’s eyes for one minute. This video shows what happened.

It’s clear that some participants found the experience very emotional, perhaps looking at people they would otherwise ignore in favour of devices.
