There are a lot of questions to ask before a first date… What should I wear? Will he like me? What if he has a crazy ex who turns up and throws stones at me?

But arguably the biggest question of all is: what can I eat that isn’t going make me feel bloated and doesn’t have garlic and will keep me full.

Well look no further – according to Shona Wilkinson, Head Nutritionist at Nutricentre, these are some foods that you should consider eating before the big outing.

Nuts – These are a good source of magnesium which can have a calming effect which will help to get rid of those first date nerves. Wilkinson advised staying away from foods that raise your blood sugar too quickly as these can make you jittery.

Salmon and olives – If you are planning on drinking alcohol, foods containing healthy fats are the way to go. “Overall, it’s important that you do eat before drinking to slow the absorption of alcohol and additionally reduce the irritation that it causes to the stomach. Include healthy fats such as salmon or olive oil dressing to slow absorption of alcohol, thereby slowing the work for your liver. Don’t have time for a meal? Snack on olives before you go out,” says Wilkinson.

Crunchy fruits and vegetable – Carrots, apples and celery are apparently good for getting rid of plaque build-ups which cause bad breath. Celery is also said to combat bloating (double whammy).

Water – Dehydration is one of the main causes for bad breath which means drink plenty of it before leaving the house. Wilkinson explains: “Dehydration is one of the most common reasons of bad breath. If you are one of those people, who survive on coffee and forget about topping up their water bottle you are most likely to develop bad breath during the day.”

Legumes – A bloated tummy is the last thing you want while trying to having the craic with a new guy. This is where legumes come in. They behave like a fibre, assisting the digestive system and bowel movements.

Chocolate and oysters – Chocolate improves your mood which is perfect if you’re feeling too lazy to make an effort while oysters are known for getting you in the mood for some sexy time.
