An illustration of Winnie the Pooh has been sold at auction for £314,500, at a London auction house.
The ink drawing of Winnie playing Poohsticks with Piglet and Christopher Robin was originally published in 1928, and is taken from chapter six of the second book, ‘The House At Pooh Corner’ by A.A Milne.
The image was held in a private collection since the 1970s, but was sold yesterday under the title, ‘For a long time they looked at the river beneath them’.
The image is taken from one of four books illustrated by EH Shepard.
The illustration was sold by London auction house Sothebys, who also auctioned off a number of children’s books, including classic works of Beatrix Potter and Arthur Rackham.
Shepard was made an OBE in 1972 in recognition of his illustrations, and died on 24 March 1976, aged 96.
