Rejoice children of the 90s!

I remember the good old days, when MTV actually played music.

This was pre-Internet. When you had to stay up all night in the hope of hearing your favorite band. Yup, I came up when bands were still a thing. You know, four to five people playing various instruments in rhythmic fashion? No?…Oh.

Way back in the day, MTV aired its TV shows as a subsidiary to the main draw – the music. It just so happened that these shows – Bevis and Butthead, Daria, 120 Minutes and The Real World became cultural phenomenon’s in their own right.

To celebrate turning 35 this year, MTV have announced the launch of a brand new channel called MTV Classic, a dedicated new home to all the old MTV shows. To celebrate, we’ve decided to look back at some of the stand-out shows that made growing up just that bit easier.

Remember Daria? The original riot girl and sullen outsider who always had the best one liners?

She inspired a generation of girls to be smart and revolt against the preconceived stereotypes of how women should act. Daria Morgendoffer  hated everyone around her, with the exception of her best friend, Jane the artist and Jane’s hot older brother Trent.

What about was Beavis and Butthead?

The heavy metal-loving dim wits who thought everything sucked. The show started out with the two of them watching music videos and ripping the shit out of cringy musicians. They worked a dead end job in a burger restaurant and found their joy in shunning society.  They even had their own movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America which was the biggest deal in 1996 and starred Bruce Willis and Demi Moore alongside the teens.

The Real World was basically the first reality TV show, a blueprint that many copied after it first aired in 1992. In the early days, the show was applauded for bringing contemporary adult issues to the masses. However, like most good things, the show went downhill and was criticised for focusing too much on alcohol and sex. It had a good run though and survived 21 years.

120 Minutes was every music lovers wet dream. The show brought alternative music to the masses. It began on March 10, 1986 and featured interviews with the best bands at the time like The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and Radiohead to name a few.
