Olivia Rodrigo has addressed rumours that her single ‘vampire‘ is about Taylor Swift.
Fans began speculating on the lyrics of the track following news that Rodrigo would have to give 50% of royalties and credits from her song ‘deja vu’ to Swift after fans called out similarities between it and ‘Cruel Summer.‘
The ‘drivers license’ singer was also accused of plagiarism for her single ‘good 4 u’ after noticing similarities to Paramore’s song ‘Misery Business’.
She now shares credits and royalties with the band too.
Speaking to The Guardian about the ‘vampire’ lyrics, and the claims that they’re about Swift, Rodrigo says she was very surprised that people thought this
“I was very surprised when people thought that. I never want to say what any of my songs are about.
“I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to be about this one thing,” she explained.
The lyrics in question in the song are “Bloodsucker, famef**ker. Bleedin’ me dry, like a goddamn vampire,” which led fans to conspire that it related to the credits and royalties she shares with the Wildest Dreams songstress.
Discussing the plagiarism allegations, she described it as “disappointing to see people take things out of context and discredit any young woman’s work”.
The ‘hope ur ok’ singer says these accusations coming so early in her career meant she was unaware of the ‘litigious’ side of the music industry.
“I feel like now I know so much more about the industry and I just feel…better equipped in that regard. It wasn’t something I thought about too much.”
