Emma Thompson’s raw honesty about anorexia is something we need to listen to

Gillian Fitzpatrick

It’s not often that a high-profile actress is happy to discuss a particularly devastating undercurrent of Hollywood: namely anorexia.

But Emma Thompson has now done just that – and it’s a raw conversation that we all need to listen to.

Speaking on a Swedish chat-show last week, the Oscar-winner certainly didn’t hold back. She stated that “so many kids, girls and boys now” are impacted by the disease and that a load of her peers simply don’t eat.

Describing anorexia as “evil,” she added that the problem was “only getting worse”.

The London-born 57-year-old added that while filming Brideshead Revisited almost a decade ago, she was horrified when one of her co-stars was asked to lose weight.

Talking on chat-show Skavlan, she revealed: “There was a wonderful actress in a film I did called Brideshead Revisited and the producer said to her, ‘would you lose some weight?’ and she was exquisite and I said to them, ‘If you speak to her about this again on any level I will leave this picture. You are never to do that.'”

Emma went on to say that this is an issue about which we all have to make noise – and we couldn’t agree more.
