Emma Thompson won’t be the most popular lady with working mothers when this gets out.
The award-winning actress has stirred a bit of controversy after stating in a recent interview with the Daily Mail:
“You can’t be a great mum and keep working all the time. I wanted to spend more time with my family. A year off was my birthday present to myself. I didn’t actually act or write. I was just a mum.”
The comments come following Thompson revealing she took a year- long break from her acting and writing pursuits to spend extra time with her 14 year old daughter – recommending other mothers do the same.
Spending the time cooking, and teaching ad-hoc drama classes in her daughter’s school, the 55 year old said:
“I highly recommend others to do the same if they can afford it.”
The actress, who is rumoured to be worth roughly $50million, has been met with an online backlash:

Does Emma Thompson think everyone has £30 million to their name? How else does she expect mothers to finance not working?

“You can’t be a great mom & keep working all the time?” Really Emma Thompson? Some mothers don’t have a choice. That doesn’t make them bad.

Thompson isn’t the first to come under fire for her comments on working mums, with Gwyneth Paltrow releasing some pretty interesting views on how much tougher it is to be an actress mum than working a 9-5.
With a strongly worded response to Gwynnie published in the New York Post, we’re waiting for the Thompson rage reply any day now.
