Why holidaying during ‘Shoulder Season’ is gaining popularity and how it saves you money

Sophie Collins

Planning a holiday has long revolved around peak seasons – summer and festive holidays.

However, in recent years, an increasing number of holidaymakers have discovered the perks of heading abroad during the shoulder season

Falling between the peak and off-peak seasons, the shoulder season is a great window when cities and beach resorts are less crowded, the weather is still pretty nice, and travel costs are significantly lower (win, win, win).

What is Shoulder Season?

Shoulder season refers to the transitional periods between the busiest tourist times (peak season) and the least busy periods (off-season).

For example, spring and autumn are typically shoulder seasons for summer hotspots.

Whereas, late winter or early spring might be the shoulder season for ski resorts. It’s the sweet spot when tourism slows down, but conditions for travel are still good.

Why is Should Season gaining popularity?

Cheaper Flights

Airlines often charge a premium for tickets during peak travel times due to such high demand.

However, during shoulder season, flights are significantly less expensive.

For instance, a roundtrip flight to Europe during the shoulder season can cost hundreds less compared to peak summer months.

Discounted Accommodation

Hotels and rentals are notorious for hiking prices during high season.

Shoulder season, on the other hand, often sees rates drop as properties just want to fill rooms.

Whether you’re staying in a boutique hotel, a resort, or an Airbnb, you’re likely to find deals that make your stay much more affordable.

Lower prices on tours and activities

From guided excursions to theme parks, many attractions offer discounted rates during shoulder season to attract visitors.

Smaller crowds also mean you’re more likely to get personal attention during tours or the chance to enjoy activities without waiting hours in line.

Dining and Shopping Deals

Restaurants, cafes, and shops in tourist hotspots often adjust their prices to reflect seasonal demand.

During shoulder season, you’re more likely to find happy hour specials, prix-fixe menus, and discounted items as businesses try to draw in customers.

So, by dodging peak-season crowds and taking advantage of lower costs, you can enjoy a more relaxed, personalised, and budget-friendly holiday in 2025.
