It’s been 25 years since the first ever text was sent – here’s what it said

Do you remember your first phone? I do. It was a little Siemens number with a flippy bit over the keypad that snapped off almost immediately. It was also super advanced as it allowed me to access what was once known as WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, meaning that I could go on the World Wide Web on my shitty little phone before most people even had WiFi in their gafs. (Though, once I was on there I had nothing to look at because Bebo wasn't a thing yet and also it ate about five euros worth of credit every second but sure look.) 25 years ago today, the first ever text message was sent by a lad named Neil Papworth, a test engineer who sent the message through Vodafone using a PC. It read: 'Merry Christmas.' Bless. Neil was just 22-years-old at the time and he didn't really think that the sending of the first SMS (short message service) was actually going to be as much of a big deal as it was. Oh, how wrong you were, Neil. Oh, how wrong you were. The humble text seems to be under threat by the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger though, with many opting to use online services instead of network ones to send their messages.
