A woman has given birth to a baby girl outside Primark after going into labour on a busy Birmingham street.

It’s believed that the women popped into town to do some shopping but went into labour outside the popular clothing chain on New Street. Members of the public ran to her aid, including Primark staff who brought sheets and towels to conceal the woman from passersby, while an off-duty doctor was luckily on hand to help with the delivery.

“We were just walking out of Primark when I saw a crowd of people. We thought it was a street performance act. It was only when I walked out that I realised it was a woman giving birth,” an onlooker told the Daily Mail.

“She seemed to be by herself and there were no medics there. She can’t have been there very long as I didn’t see her when we went in. It must have literally just whooshed out because someone had just placed it on her chest and everyone cheered. The placenta hadn’t even come out yet.”

Emergency services fled to the scene and took the pair to hospital by ambulance, with a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirming that both mother and baby are “doing OK” following the surprise arrival.
