Great news for the Treaty City this afternoon; Limerick is set to be the first national ‘City of Culture’.
Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD, has today announced an initiative whereby one city in Ireland will be designated National City of Culture every two years, and will hold the title for one calendar year.
Home to Thomond Park and The University Concert Hall, Limerick is the first Irish city chosen to receive the honour of the title, which it will hold through 2014.
The Limerick Leader today quotes Minister Deenihan as saying; ‘I’m delighted to announce this new initiative today. I want the National City of Culture Initiative to be a clarion call to artists and arts organisations, local authorities, City Councils, local representatives and members of the public to work together in the development of an exciting calendar of events in their city.’
Watch out Limerick, we’re planning the roadtrips already!
