Richard Martinez has made an emotional appeal after his 20-year-old son, Christopher, was killed in the shooting spree in California on Friday night.

Yesterday he told reporters of his family’s heartbreak following the tragedy. He also pointed a finger at politicians and the NRA over gun control policies.

He said: “Why did Chris die? Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights. What about Chris’ right to live?

“When will this insanity stop? When will enough people say ‘stop this madness, we don’t have to live like this’? Too many have died. We should say to ourselves, ‘not one more’”.

Elliot Rodger allegedly stabbed three people before killing three more in a shooting spree in Isla Vista. He died from a gunshot wound to the head which is believed to have been self-inflicted.

According to reports this morning, family had expressed their concerns for the 22-year-old to the authorities last month. He had also been receiving psychiatric care.

However after speaking to Rodger, police felt no further action was necessary, describing him as “polite and courteous”.

Santa Barbara Sheriff Bill Brown said: “They determined he did not meet the criteria for an involuntary mental health hold. He appeared timid and shy”.
