Case of coronavirus confirmed in Trinity College Dublin

A case of coronavirus has been confirmed within Trinity College Dublin.

TCD has written to staff and students to inform them that a case of Covid-19 has been reported within the campus.

The university said that as a precaution, part of the city centre campus would close but the rest of the university would remain open and operate as normal.

It’s understood the case is among the seven new cases confirmed by the HSE on Thursday night.

Four of the seven new cases have been diagnosed in males in the east of the country who travelled from northern Italy. Two of the cases – both females – are as a result of close contact with an existing case in the west of the country.

One new case, meanwhile, a male in the south of the country, is as a result of community transmission. The patient is currently being treated at Cork University Hospital (CUH), where all outpatient appointments on Friday (6 March) have been cancelled.

TCD has said the HSE will contact anyone who was in close contact with the infected person to ensure that they receive any necessary medical attention.
