Six New Year Resolutions We Always Make (And Struggle To Keep!)

Every single year...

Her

Did you stick to your New Year resolutions for 2014? No, we can’t say that we did either. And yet with the end of the year drawing closer, we know we’re going to make the same ones all over again. From cutting back on those glasses of wine and the number of hours we spend on Facebook to spending more quality time with our friends and family, here are six New Year resolutions we make year in, year out…

Get super fit

Every January we renew our gym membership, binge on Pilates classes, and take brisk walks to and from the office. Come February or March, however, our trips to the gym become less frequent, we start to forget what our Pilates teacher looks like and we start hopping in the car in the mornings. Activity picks up again when we book our summer holiday and the thought of whipping out bikini motivates us to get back on the wagon. There is another major lull at the end of the summer before another dash of exercise in the run up to Christmas to fit into that party dress. We’re back to January then, and the whole cycle starts all over again…

Too Much Exercise Yup, indeed. Overdoing your exercise can overwork your adrenal glands by causing your body to release too much cortisol. This can lead to fatigue, which can leave you shattered for days. The Mayo Clinic advises to know your body and your level of fitness. They say you should be able to wake up the next day and repeat the same activity without substantial effort.

Stop eating junk food

At the beginning of the year we bring super healthy packed lunches to work, do a weekly grocery shop packed with fruits and vegetables and try out lots of new low-fat recipes we’ve spent time researching online. Slowly we start to slip back into our old habits and the odd cheeky pizza or take away starts to creep into our weekly diet. There are just too many delicious temptations in the office, at home and on the supermarket shelves for this one to work for too long!

Weekly catch ups with friends

As we catch up with our best pals over Christmas we make major plans with our pals to meet at least once a week. Or every second week, or at least once a month. That’s pretty regular, right? But as the year progresses and work, the gym or boyfriends get in the way, before we know it we’re only meeting as a group for birthdays. This year we’re determined to make more an effort, and take the time to spend with the people who make us laugh the most.

Stress less and enjoy life

Hasn’t 2014 felt like the shortest year yet? Life is short and it’s there to be enjoyed so it’s not a bad idea to make a conscious effort to be less stressed. Everything from having an existential crisis about what colour shoes to buy, to something overwhelming happening at work or at home can leave us feeling stressed, which takes a toll on our health and happiness. In 2015 it might be an idea to make more time for ourselves and take some deep breaths when it all starts to get too much.

Cut down on alcohol

More often than not our New Year’s hangover is the main driver of this annual resolution. We start the year with great intentions of cutting down on our alcohol intake, but when it comes right down to out, the lure of a great night out on the tiles with our friends to beat the January blues wins every time. We can’t see this one going any differently in 2015…

Be more organised

With our time, our money, our work, our emails. The list is endless. We get a gorgeous new diary every Christmas to fill with lists and notes to sort out our lives, but inevitably this only lasts for a few weeks before we start forgetting to jot things down and it gets lost in a handbag. We’ve our eye on a new leather-bound beauty so we’re going to give this one our best shot again in 2015…
