A French town has banned people from dressing up as clowns, after a social media trend across the country has seen people don the costumes to spook children and attack the public.

With the Halloween spirit taking over this weekend, French Mayor Pierre Dudieuzere, from the town of Vendargues in southern France made the decision to band his citizens wearing clown fancy dress to cut down on incidents of attack on the public.

The phenomenon of dressing as a clown to intimidate the public in the region has spread on Facebook, with groups tracking sightings and uploading warnings to the public.

The decision means Vendargues, with 6,000 inhabitants, is the first town to ban clowning around.
