Facebook purchased beloved mobile messaging service, WhatsApp, for a cool $16 billion last week and updates to the system are already underway.

WhatsApp founder and chief executive, Jan Koum, announced that the company is working on adding free voice calling to the iPhone and Android app.

Continuing their mission to connect users and keep people in touch, the evolution of the service is will take the speed and efficiency of text messaging to voice.

At the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona  Koum said: “I grew up in Russia, we had a telephone line, but a load of our neighbours didn’t. It became a shared resource for the whole apartment complex. People would come and knock on the door and ask to call their family in another city.

“We’re adding voice to WhatsApp so people can stay in touch with friends and loved ones no matter where they are in the world.”

Koum revealed plans to expand the service to Windows Phone and Blackberry users further down the line.

Over the weekend WhatsApp users were up in arms after the service was down for the entire evening due to service issues.
