Best News Ever? Drinking Coffee Might Actually Have Health Benefits

This is music to our ears.

Cathy Donohue

There are days when you just need a coffee (or three) but sometimes we feel a little guilty for drinking too much of it.

That might all be about to change though thanks to research conducted by the National Cancer Institute.

They have carried out a survey and the results show coffee is good for your liver (we’re silently screaming YAY as we type).

This research used data from 27,000 coffee drinkers, who were asked to record their caffeine intake over 24 hours.

The next step was to test those participating for levels of enzymes including aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). These enzymes are indicators of how well our livers are functioning.

People who said they drank three coffees or more a day had lower levels of these enzymes, meaning healthier livers.

Speaking about the survey, Dr Xiao, a lead researcher in the study said: “Our findings link total and decaffeinated coffee intake to lower liver enzyme levels.

“These data suggest that ingredients in coffee, other than caffeine, may promote liver health. Further studies are needed to identify these components”.
