Are millennials really not having sex? Our readers reveal the truth

Megan Roantree

Are young Irish women not having sex?

Stories about sex will always interest people, but when a story by Time was published recently which found that millennials are having less sex than their parents and previous generations, it really took off.

The story spread across the world wide web and readers everywhere were baffled by the news.

The study found that 15% of people between the ages of 20 and 24 have not had sex since they were 18.

The last time young people had such low libidos was the 1920s.

Things like Netflix, social media and the general technology overload were some of the main factors that many felt contributed to this statistic.

But it was also found that our generation is taking longer to grow up, from moving out to getting a career.

So while the media was horrified by fact that young people favour Snapchat over sex,  there was one factor that we didn’t take into consideration – the research was American.

While a huge number of people were surveyed and extensive research took place, it is hard to apply these results to our little catholic island.

In our recent Slice of Ireland survey we asked readers to answer several questions about sex.

One of the main ones being how often you engaged in the act.

Almost 1 in 3 readers said that they have sex several times a week. This was the most popular answer, and it was followed by 21% of people saying that they have sex once a week.

So while it seems that our pals across the pond are busier texting, the reality is that our raunchy nation are as active as ever. In fact, less than 5% of those who took part in our study said that they never have sex.

Not bad Paddys, not bad.
