One of the greatest struggles in life is finding the motivation to get fit, and when you do start exercising, finding the willpower to keep going is nearly as tough. With the help of two leading Irish athletes, Jessie and Thomas Barr, we’ve put together eight tips to keep in mind when you’re up in the gym just working on your fitness..
Fuel your body
Make sure to start your day with a good breakfast, just like your Mammy always told you. Eggs are always a good choice, or a bowl of piping hot porridge with a dash of protein powder.
Invest in a good pair of runners
The price tag might put you off but decent sneakers will provide more support and reduce the chance of injuries. Think of the cash you’ll save on physios in the long run!
Have a routine
Sticking to going for a run or to the gym on certain days of the week or at certain times of the day will help you build a routine. It’s more difficult to get out the door when there isn’t a set plan in place.
Buddy up
Find yourself a training partner. This will motivate you to get to the gym and stick to your fitness goals.
Make a note
It’s hard to notice all of the little things improving without keeping a log. With a diary you can see the differences, otherwise it’s difficult to keep going.
Shake things up
Try to keep things interesting. Avoid doing the same things in the gym every day. If you run, try changing your route.
Allow your body to recover
20 to 30 minutes after exercise eat something small and high in sugar, or pop a scoop of recovery powder in some water for yourself. This will help your body to recover after a work out and ultimately means you won’t feel as tired or sore.
Protect your health
The last thing you want when you’re trying to get fit is to feel tired and run down. To help boost your immune system, take a multivitamin supplement each day like international 400m hurdler Jessie Barr, who takes Wellwoman as part of her daily routine.
Wellwoman contains a spectrum of micronutrients for all-round nutritional support including vitamins B6, B12 and iron which contribute to normal energy release. The capsules been developed with female health specifically in mind, supporting areas of health which are of most benefit to women. Food supplements must not replace a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. As with other food supplements, seek professional advice if you are under medical supervision, pregnant, breastfeeding or suffer from food allergies.
