Get Your Stretch On: The Benefits of Yoga

Too sleepy to hit the gym this weekend? Why not pull some yoga moves instead? An A-List fave when it comes to getting fit, here's everything you need to know about getting your stretch on...

Her

For years, yoga has been one of the A-list’s favourite ways to get fit. Gwyneth, Jennifer and Gaga are all major fans of this ancient form of exercise.

Now, call us crazy, but we’re inclined to think that if something is good enough for the Hollywood elite, then it is most certainly good enough for us too.

You might be wondering why celebrities love yoga so much. The reason is because it is one of the best ways to stretch, tone and get rid of those extra calories. Plus, it’s great for helping you to shake off the stresses of your day and relax.

But don’t just take our word for it. Here are some of the other benefits a regular yoga practice can bestow upon you:

  • Your body will be toned, but not bulky: yoga lengthens limbs and builds lean muscle. Think arms like Jennifer Aniston and you’ll have an idea of how it can transform your body.
  • Your immune system will get stronger.
  • You’ll experience less pain.
  • Your movements will be freer and you’ll feel stronger.
  • You’ll have more energy and endurance.
  • You’ll sleep better.
  • Your stress levels will drop considerably.
  • Your concentration will get better.
  • You will be insanely flexible.

So ladies, are you inspired to have a go at getting your stretch on? If you’re seriously considering investing in a yoga mat, it’s important to find a type of yoga that will suit your own body (and your fitness goals).

Here’s a quick breakdown of the main types of yoga and what they’re about:

1. Hatha Yoga: Hatha yoga is a simple, gentle practice of yoga that focuses on the main asanas (or yoga poses) and not much else. This is perfect for you if you want to learn the basics and avoid any strenuous work. There’s no jumping around or contortions, just basic yoga and breathing techniques.

It’s perfect for you if: You want to de-stress and have a basic introduction to yoga practice.
Avoid it if: You want fast results and enjoy feeling the burn when it comes to exercise.

2. Bikram Yoga: Also known as hot yoga, Bikram is practiced in a room heated to a temperature between 95 and 100 degrees. The high temperature loosens up your muscles and causes you to sweat out any toxins within your body.

It’s perfect for you if: You like to push yourself and are of the opinion that a good sweat = a good workout.
Avoid it if: You don’t like the thoughts of intense heat, severe exertion  or having strangers sweat on you.

Yoga has tons of positive benefits for mind and body.

3. Iyengar Yoga: This type of yoga uses props, such as belts and blocks, to help you get into a proper alignment when you’re in a pose. It’s a precision form of yoga, meaning that the correct pose is essential. The poses themselves tend to be held for minutes at a time, so it is tough, but the props help.

It’s perfect for you if: You have an injury or suffer from back pain or if you’re interested in learning perfect form.
Avoid it if: You don’t like standing still for long periods of time.

4. Ashtanga Yoga: Also known as Power Yoga, this type of yoga focuses on giving you a whole-body workout. As you move into a pose, the teacher will adjust your form to ensure you get the most out of your practice. Both Madonna and Gaga favour this type of yoga.

It’s perfect for you if: You have buckets of energy and are up for a challenge.
Avoid it if: You want a gentle introduction into yoga.
