An investigation is underway in California after a woman attempted to enter a maternity ward carrying a lifelike doll designed to look like a newborn. The woman was wearing nurses scrubs at the time.

Tonya Whitney first went into the hospital on Saturday, accompanied by her husband. At the time, they were each carrying a doll.

Local Police Captain Tom Trindad said the pair drew suspicion from security officials and were told to leave.

They returned to medical centre on Monday wearing nurse’s scrubs and again tried to enter the maternity ward.

After hospital security notified police, Whitney, 41, was cited with misdemeanor trespassing. Police said they were concerned Whitney might have wanted to take a living baby.

In a TV interview, the woman said that she makes the dolls for a living to “give comfort to women who have lost babies or can’t have them”.
