Choosing the perfect baby name is not the easiest of tasks, especially if you don't want your child to be one of six Liams in his class.
However, this unique Irish baby name is definitely a rare pick, which, according to Irish naming records, has only been given to five babies in 2024.
Stemming from the Old Irish word for 'sea', 'Lir' is without a doubt a beautiful choice for the newest addition to your family.
The name might ring a bell with certain people who are familiar with the well-known legend The Children of Lir.
The Irish tale tells the story of the four children of King Lir, Aoibh, Fionnuala, Aodh, Fiachra, and Conn, who are turned into swans by their jealous stepmother, Aoife, and forced to roam for 900 years.
They endure hardship and separation after eventually being turned back to their human forms due to the ringing of a church bell.
According to the Central Statistics Office, the name Lir first appeared on the charts for the first time back in 2020, when it was given to three babies.
The name disappeared from the charts for three years, as a name needs to be given to three or more children in a year to rank. It wasn't until 2023 that the name gained some traction again when it was given to four babies that year.
The next year, five baby Lirs were born, taking the 582nd spot on the overall ranking, making it a unique find.
