WATCH: Smithers Finally Comes Out In The Best Way Possible In New Simpsons

And the inspiration behind it is seriously emotional.

Go on Smithers.

The Simpsons is in it’s 27th season, so it’s about time we had some home truths.

Waylon Smithers Jr. has been harboring his sexuality and unrequited love for Mr. Burns for too long, and finally opens up in a new episode of the classic cartoon.

But rather than make a song and dance of his coming out, writer Rob LaZebnik explained to The New York Post that they wanted to keep it low key:

“We didn’t really want to have that big moment of ‘I’m out’… Instead, just have it be a big embrace — like everyone knows it.”

He added that the episode was penned to show his son, who is gay, that he supports him.

He added:

“I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?’ ”

We love this.
