Rory McIlroy may have won the first tournament he entered following his split with Caroline Wozniacki but it appears that the tennis star is finding it harder to recover, crashing out in the first round of the French Open earlier today.
Wozniacki was beaten by Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who is ranked 64th in the world, and will make an early exit from the competition. In a statement after the crushing defeat, she asked the media to concentrate on questions relating to her sporting career, rather than her personal life.
“I was not prepared for this, it all came as a bit of a shock,” she said.
“I don’t really want to talk about my personal life. I hope that you all can understand that. The only thing I really have to say is that, you know, (I want to) thank everybody for their support and sweet messages. What happens in my personal life, I just want to really keep that between my closest people around me. You know, I just have to move on.”
McIlroy announced the end of the pair’s two-year relationship earlier this month, just days after the invitations for their upcoming wedding were sent to guests.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
