Ex-WWE star and star of Hogan Knows Best, Hulk Hogan aka Terry Bollea has just won a historic lawsuit in the United States.
The retired wrestler was awarded $115m after the gossip site Gawker published a sex tape of himself and his then best friend’s wife, which was recorded unbeknownst to him.
His legal team had argued that the tape was a violation of privacy, and not newsworthy according to BBC News.
Gawker’s legal team had argued on behalf of freedom of the press, and argued that although their actions may have been distasteul it was more important to uphold press freedom as a concept.
Hogan’s lawyers made a statement outside the courtroom:
“This is not only his victory today, but also anyone else who’s been victimised by tabloid journalism.”
Gawker argued because Hogan, real name Terry Bollea had put his private life out there for public consumption, that the story was newsworthy.
Hogan then took to Twitter to celebrate his victory at the courthouse:
Thank you God for justice, only love 4Life. HH
