Jo Koy’s Barbie remarks did not go down well at the Golden Globes

Award-winning director, Greta Gerwig has responded to Jo Koy’s controversial Barbie remarks.

The comedian mocked Gerwig’s Barbie movie during his opening monologue at the Golden Globes.

Jo Koy sparked uproar online after referring to the box office hit as a film about “a plastic doll with big boobs”.

Many viewed the remarks as degrading and sexist, but Gerwig didn’t let his comments take away from the film’s success.

During an interview with BBC Radio 4, the ‘Lady Bird’ director said Koy technically wasn’t wrong.

She quipped: “Well, you know, he’s not wrong. She’s the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts so he was right on.”

Refusing to let the controversy take away from the film’s Golden Globe win, Gerwig said it was a wonderful night for the Barbie team.

She said it felt “very wonderful and emotional” to accept the award alongside Margot Robbie and America Ferrera.

She said: “Barbie has been around since 1959 and she’s been a villain and she’s been a hero, but it felt like, in a way, even though it’s so seemingly superficial, that it was such a rich place to start.”

Gerwig said the response to the film has been nothing short of incredible.

“The fact that the film has inspired such a range of reactions seems fitting,” she told BBC Radio 4.

Barbie made history at this year’s Golden Globes by winning the first-ever Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.

Letting a cheap dig overshadow Barbie’s success would be a major disservice.

If anyone needs us we’ll be re-reading America Ferrera’s monologue again and again.
