Angelina Jolie has been made a Dame by the British Government in recognition of her humanitarian work.

The Tomb Raider actress has spent most of this week in London at a summit to stamp out the use of rape as a weapon in war-torn countries.

She was accompanied on the trip by husband Brad Pitt and was last night honoured with the title of honorary Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George by Foreign Secretary William Hague as part of the Queen’s birthday celebrations.

The accolade is awarded to those who “render extraordinary or important non-military service in a foreign country” and Jolie said she was delighted with the recognition.

“To receive an honour related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to,” she said.
