The Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement

Police searching for Constance Marten and Mark Gordon’s missing newborn have discovered the remains in a wooded area on Wednesday, they have confirmed.

Marten and Gordon were arrested on Monday in Stanmer Villas on suspicion of child neglect, after a member of the public reported seeing them shortly before 9.30pm that day and remain in police custody.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford of the Metropolitan Police says it is “the news we did not want to hear” and that “we will do everything we can to make sure we find out what has happened”.

Basford also stressed that it was “imperative” for members of the public to refrain from speculation.

Marten and Gordon remain in police custody. He added: “An application for an extension of their detention for a further 36 hours was sought and granted by Brighton Magistrates’ Court.”

Chief Superintendent James Collis ended the speech by offering his “heartfelt condolences” to the wider family of the baby following the outcome of the search.

On Tuesday, police recovered what was believed to be a baby blanket in the woods, along with burnt items.

Pictures from the scene in Brighton, East Sussex, show clothes strewn across the ground as cops were spotted inspecting burnt items.

As concern for the baby’s welfare grew, police confirmed on Tuesday that Marten and Gordon had been further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
