“It’s really important for people to know that the sport is really accepting.”
SSE Airtricity and the League of Ireland have teamed up to support LGBT Ireland in June because incase you didn’t know, it’s Pride month!
LGBT Ireland is a national support service for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people as well as their families and friends.
This weekend marks the first weekend of Pride month and to celebrate, there’s lots of sports on the TV that you can get stuck in to – you’re welcome.
Many League of Ireland players including Shelbourne’s Keeva Keegan joined the campaign to promote LGBTQ+ rights and encourage an inclusive game.
I caught up with Keeva ahead of the sponsorship to ask her why being a part of this movement is so important to her.
She said she wants to create a safe space for people to play football and wants to let young people coming up in the sport that it’s okay to be whoever you want to be.
She said: “This partnership with the National LGBT+ Helpline is great obviously for the awareness and to get it out there.
“We want to get it more known, you know, it’s really important.
“I have a lot of friends and family who are a part of the LGBT community so I think it’s really important for people to know that’s okay and that the sport is really accepting.”
The Shelbourne star added: “It’s great to be doing things like this so young kids can see that we’re talking about how inclusive football is in Ireland.
So now that you’re in the spirit, here are the League of Ireland Women’s Premiere Division fixtures for today.
