GB News claims Rachael Blackmore is one of “greatest British” sportspeople

Not again.

GB News has tried to claim Irish jockey Rachael Blackmore as one of the “greatest Britons” – and people are furious.

Blackmore recently made history at this month’s Cheltenham festival, becoming the first-ever woman to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

On Tuesday night’s The Dan Wootton Tonight show, GB News ran a segment asking a panel for their “Greatest Britons”.

And Rachael, despite being from a small village in Tipperary, was one of the chosen few. Contributor Dawn Neesom went straight in by stating the jockey was her top choice.

“My greatest Briton is Rachael Blackmore, the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup,” she said. “Lovely pictures of her today back home in Ireland with her winning horse and the little Gold Cup.”

Naturally, Irish viewers were not happy, expressing their disbelief that the Brits were “at it yet again”.

Sorry lads, Rachael Blackmore is Irish, from Ireland, so therefore can’t be a Brit. Geography classes for somebody now,” one person said.

Another pointed out: “So, Ms. Neesom states that ‘Rachael is back home in Ireland’, and she nominates her for ‘today’s greatest Briton’? You can’t designate people as ‘Britons’ just because they won the top two championship races at your top jumps racing festival, Ms. Neesom. That’s not how it works.”

“How can they keep getting this so wrong FFS,” a third added.

Meanwhile, a fourth joked: “Give it a rest Britons. We’ve offered you Conor McGregor on a number of occasions and you won’t take him.”

Blackmore made headlines over the weekend for her historic win, which she adds to her Grand National triumph and back to back Champion Hurdle victories in the past year.

After returning home on Sunday, she celebrated her huge achievement with a night out in Kilkenny.

I bought many drinks last night,” she told reporters in Co Waterford. “That’s why I’m sounding a bit groggy this morning!”
